Ginnie Wins Big at USATF Classic
02/13/2012 - 13:50 by Devon Jeffreys Ginnie Crawford doesn't race the indoor track very often, but when she does, she shows exactly what she's capable in any given race. Ginnie clocked a sub-8-second 60mH to win with ease on Saturday at the USATF Classic in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The time was six hundredths better than runner-up Dawn Harper, the 2008 Olympic Champion in the event. It was a margin that surprised even Ginnie herself. But with training going well early in the season, great results were sure to follow.
Circumstances leading up to the event were no picnic for Ginnie and her fellow Icon runners at the Classic, as travel issues kept many of them from being able to prepare properly. But once Ginnie got on the track, all the issues seemed to fade away.
Ginnie was one of five Icon runners to compete at the USATF Classic and though she was the only one to walk away victorious, a few others had strong showings. Brenda Martinez, a winner in the 1500 meters two weeks ago at the U.S. Open in New York, took third in the same event in Fayetteville with a time of 4:09.96, just six tenths off the winning time and .44 off her personal best. Jeneba Tarmoh began her season on Saturday with the 60 meters and ran strong, qualifying for the final with a 7.22 in her prelim and finishing just a tick slower, at 7.23 in the final. She was just two tenths off the meet record pace set by Tiana Madison in the final. Damola Osayomi ran a 7.50 60 in the women's prelim to fall short of qualifying for the final. Shawn Crawford ran the men's 60 on Saturday, but his prelim time of 6.78 also left him outside of the final eight. Each of them finished fourth, Keshia logging a 53-second 400 in the women's event and Greg finishing the men's event in 46.91.
