Crawford, Merritt Race to Victory
08/31/2009 - 15:38 by Paul Kingston

The past several days have been extremely good ones for two of Icon's athletes.

LaShawn Merritt, who recently beat arch-rival Jeremy Wariner to take his 400m world title, repeated the feat this past Friday, storming to victory in the Weltklasse Zurich meet in 44.21. Wariner finished in 44.62.

And then, just for the fun of it, LaShawn picked up another win on Monday night in England, taking the title in the British Grand Prix in 45.11.

Afterward, he reflected on the season with BBC Sport:

"I'm feeling great. I won the Olympics and now I'm world champion and I've come here. I'm feeling good."

CRAWFORD BACK ON TOP
Shawn Crawford turned in a fantastic performance at the British Grand Prix as well, defeating 2009 world silver medalist Wallace Spearmon to win the 200m in 20.80.

As reported by BBC Sport:

Shawn Crawford in control all the way. He wins in 20.80 after running a great bend. Spearmon finished with a great last 70m but it was too late. Devonish gets third I think. Spearmon - with his gold necklace swinging - had to work hard there. Good run from Marlon.

Afterward, Shawn spoke about the race.

"We train to be ready to compete no matter what the elements are. It's the great UK winner and I'm pleased with the win. My body feels great. It's the mental fatigue - being overseas and away from home for two months. I'm ready to hit US soil and drive my own car. Usain running those times makes me sit down and come up with a better plan."

OTHER FINISHES
Keith Moffatt took seventh in the high jump at the British Grand Prix (2.15m).
